Since formation at a 501(3)(c) not for profit enterprise 1997, Great and Small has been promoting the well-being of people with physical, cognitive, and behavioral challenges.
Our Mission
Connecting people and horses to inspire growth, enhance well-being, and enrich lives across our community.
Great and Small provides Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) to children and adults affected by physical, developmental, emotional, and learning disabilities. Through an inclusive, supportive and therapeutic engagement with horses we help our students discover their strengths, the joy of community and a sense of empowerment that stays with them long after they have left the barn.

History Timeline
Premier Accreditation Renewed!
Through the hard work of staff, volunteers, and participants, Great and Small was once again certified as Premier Accredited Center of the Professional Association for Therapeutic Horsemanship. We are one of only five such centers in the entire state of Maryland.
Ponies in the Pandemic
Despite the many challenges the COVID-19 pandemic posed for staff, volunteers, and participants, the outdoor nature of the services we offer, and the generous support of the community meant that programming went on with relatively minimal interruptions. Go team!
Our first PATH Premier Accreditation
Under the guidance of our then-Executive Director Rachel Neff, we earned our first certification as a Premier Accredited Center of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship.
Moving Along
We moved from our first home at Avenel stable in Potomac to our present location at the Rickman Farm. At this time we were a member center of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, the predecessor organization to the Professional Association for Therapeutic Riding.
