You’re Invited to a Volunteer Training!

It is a long-established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Who We Are

For nearly thirty years, Great and Small has been providing Equine-Assisted Services to children and adults affected by physical, development, emotional, and learning disabilities. Through an inclusive, supportive, and therapeutic engagement with horses, we help our participants discover their strengths, the joy of community, and a sense of empowerment that stays with them long after they have left the barn. 

What We Do

We offer mounted, unmounted, group, and individual equine assisted services. Whether an adaptive riding student is learning to trot independently or an experienced CEO is  noticing how easily a horse communicates without words, each experience is tailored to be safe, joyful, and empowering.

Physical Benefits

The rhythmic movement of a horse naturally strengthens muscles, improves balance, and enhances coordination. For individuals with physical disabilities like cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, or multiple sclerosis, equine-assisted services provide a unique, engaging way to build strength and mobility.

Mental Health Benefits

Horses provide a calming presence that helps reduce anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms. Their intuitive nature fosters trust, confidence, and emotional healing, creating a safe space for individuals to build resilience and manage stress.

Through structured activities and engagement with horses, participants improve focus, problem-solving, and communication skills. Equine-assisted services support individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and other cognitive challenges by providing hands-on, interactive learning experiences.

In coordination with local care homes, senior centers, and memory care facilities, Great and Small hosts group visits and brings horses directly to senior residences.

My experience of children with disabilities is that they are frequently not in charge of even the smallest parts of their own destiny. But, when you physically pick them up and put them on a 1,200 lb. horse, there is this wonderful sensation of them finally, not only being in charge of their own destiny, but another huge animal, and that is very powerful.
